About the Item

This late nineteenth-century chair, from the Gindabarat in the Oromia region of Ethiopia, has been finely carved from a single piece of dense, heavy wood. The circular, narrow-in-size seat is supported by three legs, which each feature an upright stilt which adjoins to the seat's base. Above the seat is an enclosed, rounded support with a beautiful central upright back-rest decorated with cut-out and engraved designs. Over time, the surface of the Ethiopian high-backed chair has developed a deep, rich patina. High-backed wooden chairs figure prominently in the installation of chiefs among different groups in Ethiopia - serving as symbols of rank and entitlement during meetings by the council of elders.
