About the Item

19th century Hollow Body Eagle Weather Vane Anonymous ca. 1870; probably New England area, USA Copper Approximate size: 11.5 (h) x 23.5 (w) x 16 (d) in. This evenly patinated hollow bodied copper moulded weather vane depicting an eagle embodies the rich heritage of American folk art. With its orb and compass arrow still intact, this eagle features a heavy patina, darkened with age and outdoor exposure. A rich verdigris is present over the surface areas and particularly beneath the wings and underbelly of the eagle while hints of green emerge with eloquence along the outer perimeter of the orb and compass arrow. Details are muted along the upper surface of the eagle, due to timely exposure to the elements and adding to the appeal of its once historical use. Condition commensurate with age. A minor loss to the tip of one of the claws (proper-right of the eagle). Otherwise very good condition (no dents or abrasions).

Large early American Antique Copper Bannerette Weather Vane Possibly J. Howard & Co. First-half of the 19th century; Northeastern, USA Copper, iron Approximate size: 24 (h) x 55 (w) x 1 (d) in. This rare and large American scrollwork bannerette weathervane recalls those produced by Jonathan Howard & Co. of West Bridgewater, MA. Further academic research may confirm or deny this possibility and an origin with J.W. Fiske & Co. of New York, shouldn’t be ruled out. Alternatively, this weathervane may also be an entirely independent work from the first half of the 19th century, steeped in the early genesis of weathervanes as an American folk art. This antique weather vane...
