About the Item
This "Ethan Allen" running horse weathervane was one of the more popular ones manufactured by the prolific copper weathervane makers of the late 19th century, "Harris & Co." of Boston, Massachusetts. You can see it displayed in their period catalogue (see image of catalogue page) and described as "suitable for all kinds of buildings and made as to indicate correctly the direction of the wind", also "These prices include vane, spire, letters, and balls" which are included with the purchase", $17 being the cost at that time (No. 4 Old Pattern). The weathervane almost exactly resembles the catalogue illustration which can be found on page 151 of Steve Miller's "The Art of The Weathervane", and even comes with the original spire, the vane, the letters, and the ball, as stipulated on the catalogue page.
This late 19th century horse weathervane, circa 1880s, was aptly named and influenced, undoubtedly, by the real life horse named "Ethan Allen"; a popular horse made famous by his successes as a mid-19th century harness racer and sired in upstate New York by an equally famous stallion named "Black Hawk." Their images were immortalized by Currier and Ive's lithographs at the time. Ethan Allen (the horse) was born in 1849 and attained fame in the 1850's harness racing circuit as a champion trotter, covering the mile in a record setting time of 2 minutes, 25 seconds. He died in 1876 at the age of 28.
The three dimensional narrow full bodied, thin mold is made of molded copper; hand-hammered into place; with a molded head and copper tail. The copper has patinated to a faded copper shade and there are a few trace areas of verdigris. The condition is good, consistent with age and use, with a couple of soldered bullet holes and copious old re-soldered repairs (see images) that were probably done in place over the years, as needed, rather than a "contemporary" restoration, thus it maintains a very nice patina and overall pleasant appearance to the original copper surface; a wonderful piece of Americana.
The contemporary customized stand was made specific to this weathervane for stability and balance, and it displays very proudly and nicely resting on the floor as it reaches to 72" from the bottom of spire to the top.
Measurements:
36" height (top of horse spire to bottom of directional)
29" wide (horse)
72" high (overall with spire) x 291/2" wide (horse rod stand) x 20" deep
Provenance: It was found atop a fraternity house at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio in the 1960's. I purchased it from that collector in 1992 and have had it in my collection ever since.

German Tinplate Clockwork Wind Up Toy by the Lehman Co. "Balky Mule" Circa 1909
By E.P. Lehman Co.
Located in Incline Village, NV
Perhaps the wildest action of all the Lehman toys, said to resemble Ernest Paul Lehman's temperament (founder of the company), "Balky Mule" was first manufactured in 1897 in Berlin (Brandenburg), and had a multi decade run; this example is from around 1909 (see image with markings to the rear of the carriage). The toy is catalogued as "EPL #425" and documented on page 59 and 60 of the book "Lehman Toys" by Jurgen & Marianne Cieslik, published in 1982.
To operate the toy; wind up the attached clockwork key on the underneath of the carriage and place the toy on the floor. Do not over-wind and be gentle, as the toy is aggressive and over 100 years old. The toy will go backwards and forward, and the clown will pop up and down as the cart goes in several different directions across the floor until it winds down (see video accompanying the listing for guidance).
The toy is found broken and/or inoperable, more often than not, because of the rough action, and typical abuse by children (after all, it was a toy).
This example is in very nice original condition and works well. The lithography and hand paint is bright and original with no touch up or repaint. The hand paint is; flesh tones to the face of the clown, red trousers, orange hair, and grey paint to the seat of the carriage. The clothing to the clown figure is still intact and all original. The lithography to the wheels features brightly colored clowns and a German marking logo. What is really unusual is the fact that the donkey still has all four of its loosely attached original legs, considering the aggressive action of the toy. The metal on the donkey is actually treated with "fabric like" paint, to simulate fur.
All in all this is a really cool toy and a "must have" for the collector of tin toys, or someone who simply wants a wonderful example of an early, "turn of the century" iconic wind up toy.
Provenance: Recently acquired from a prominent toy collection in Los Angeles, California
Dimensions: 7 1/2" long x 3" wide x 5" high
Note: After 40 plus years of dealing and collecting toys, I am justly qualified to guarantee and present the authenticity of antique and vintage toys and children's playthings; important considering the fakes and reproductions in the marketplace
it would behoove an enterprising collector, dealer, or decorator to take advantage of the opportunity to buy as many of the vintage tin...

Running Horse Weathervane on Display Stand
By L. W. Cushing & Sons
Located in Atlanta, GA
A weathervane in the form of a running horse, that was likely modeled after "Dexter" circa late 19th century on a custom display stand. The full body molded horse has a gilt surface with verdigris patina. Not entirely sure of the maker but possible by L. W. Cushing & Co. In Waltham or Harris. Co in Boston. The surface has been re-gilt historically likely dated from early 20th century. A lovely piece that transcends American fold art...
