About the Item
A unique antique French Chinoiserie style chandelier composed of ormolu mounts and Chinese porcelain elements. The chandelier is suspended by four ormolu supports connected with porcelain links, each decorated with red and blue floral patterns. The central body is formed from a Chinese porcelain vessel richly enameled in the Imari palette of underglaze blue, iron-red, and gilt, painted with stylized floral panels and scrolling foliate motifs. At the rim, an openwork ormolu crown encircles the top, while the lower portion is finished with a porcelain knop and ormolu terminal.
Six scrolling ormolu branches extend from the central porcelain body, each terminating in a candle socket fitted with white candle-form lights. The arms are detailed with acanthus scrolls and foliate motifs, connected to the porcelain vessel with finely chased mounts. The porcelain body is decorated with alternating floral reserves, chrysanthemums, and peonies, framed within patterned borders. The use of the Imari palette across the central vase, the canopy cup, and suspension links unifies the decorative scheme.
This chandelier follows the French taste for Chinoiserie during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when imported Chinese porcelains were often adapted into lighting and decorative furnishings with gilt bronze mounts. The ormolu mounts display typical French craftsmanship with finely chased details and balanced composition, while the use of Chinese porcelain aligns with the era’s fascination with exotic materials. The blending of French bronze work and imported porcelain produced highly decorative lighting fixtures of this type, intended for grand interiors.
