Art Deco Six-Arm Chandelier, Silvered Bronze, Mid-1920s France
About the Item
Beautifully finished in silvered bronze, with an attenuated shape and curving silhouette that reflects high style Art Deco in 1920s France, this sophisticated and lovely chandelier is a rare survivor. The shape and elegance of the chandelier shows the influence of Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann and other designers whose work was featured at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts), which later gave the Art Deco style its name. The chandelier features a tassel pendant in silvered bronze, and the six arms emanate from a central flower form. The top of the piece features an elaborate knot form. The piece has been rewired for contemporary use.

View All"African Drummer, " Fabulous Cubist Bronze Sculpture, France, 1920s
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A brilliant example of early French cubist sculpture, this depiction of an African drummer, her hands beating the two-sided drum and her head looking up as she sings or chants to the music, illustrates the fractured, reinvented reality that Picasso and Braque invented just ten or twenty years before. The abstracted breasts of the figure bring to mind the mature Cubism of Ossip Zadkine, Jean Souverbie...

Male Nude in Art Deco-Cubist Manner by Lenoir, 1920s
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Beautifully realized, this depiction of a male nude leaning against a rock formation shows the stylization characteristic of the Modern or Art Deco movement of the 1920s, as well as indications of fractured surfaces and tilted planes associated with Cubism. The artist was known for his Surrealist works in the late 19th century, and was associated with the mystical, religiously-saturated Salons de Rose...

"Bulls and Grasshoppers", Original Art Deco Painting for Wallpaper Design, 1920s
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Brilliantly executed in primary colors -- scarlet, deep sky blue, yellow and white -- this original painting (not a pochoir) depicts an interwoven array of Egyptian symbols -- including Apsis the bull, symbol of fertility; grasshoppers, and ancient column capitals. Executed in France, probably as the basis for a 1920s wallpaper design, the firm's name and the artist's name are both signed in ink or pencil. In the 1920s, archaeological expeditions led by Howard Carter and others in Egypt led to the discovery in 1922 of the treasure of Tutankhamun...

Art Deco Large Bronze Antique Chandelier, 1920s
Located in Bastogne, BE
Large Antique Art Deco Chandelier. 1920. Belgium.
Antique Chandelier is a wonderful example of classic style in a modern interior. Flower shades with wavy edges are made of colored glass and decorated with facets. They gently dim the light flux, creating comfortable lighting for the eyes. The base of the model is made of antique bronze. Elegant metal décor completes the composition, giving the lamp a special charm.
A six-horn chandelier will provide a comfortable level of lighting in a spacious room, will look great above a large dining table.

Léon Auguste Hugue (Paris, 1878 – Clichy-la-Garenne, 1970) began his career as a bronze fitter. In 1907, he established his own lighting bronze manufacturing business at 14 rue Pierre Levée. In 1913, he created a new limited partnership, "L. Hugue, fabrique de bronzes et d’appareils d’éclairage," at number 10 on the same street. The business grew, and around 1925, he set up a factory at 68 rue des Rondeaux, where he worked with the help of his son Maurice Léon, also a bronze fitter (see images 13 and 16). At the 1927 French Exhibition in Madrid, he received the Gold Medal diploma alongside Francis Hubens. Strangely, in 1932, Léon Hugue...
