Birgitta Sorbon Malmsten pendant lamp Kjolen, parchment & oak, Sweden, 1950s

About the Item

A beautiful Swedish Arts and Crafts pendant lamp, Kjolen (The Skirt), designed and handcrafted in the 1950s by Birgitta Sorbon Malmsten, daughter-in-law of renowned architect Carl Malmsten. The shade features a white metal frame covered in cream-colored parchment, decorated with dried plants. It is suspended from a solid oak fixture with an integrated cable shortener. The Birgitta series of lampshades, featuring parchment and dried flowers, was created in the 1950s by Birgitta Sorbon Malmsten (1923–1973), daughter-in-law of renowned architect and educator Carl Malmsten. After marrying Carl’s son, Egil Malmsten, in 1944, she began working in the Malmsten workshop, specializing in wooden inlays. She later became a teacher at the Malmsten vocational school and a member of the Malmsten architectural studio. In the 1950s, Birgitta started producing parchment lampshades in the basement of her home.
