Lisa Johansson-Pape "71-125" Ceiling Lamp for Stockmann Orno, Finland ca 1950

About the Item

Carin Lisa Johansson-Pape, was among the most significant Finnish lighting designers in the second half of the 1900s. She worked as the main designer at Stockmann Orno from the late 40s into the 60s, and alongside other icons like Yki Nummy. The allure of 20th-century Finnish lighting continues to be sought after today, and this ceiling lamp exemplifies why that is. Johansson-Pape’s designs were always minimal, straightforward, and highly functional, often times combining materials such as glass, metal and acrylic. This ceiling lamp combines a sleek look with modern elements that results in a design with an equally timeless and contemporary feel. Opal glass, also known as milk glass, is made by adding opacifiers to the melt and was a popular choice in Finnish mid-century lighting models. In this piece, the opal glass is utilised to construct the lamp’s body, an organic round shape which diverges from the classic symmetrical sphere, to achieve a more natural and relaxed look. This results in a cosy effect as the lamp provides a great ambient glow. Johansson-Pape chose brass to go with the glass; the base which attaches to the ceiling, in addition to the finial-like tip of the piece are made out of the warm, golden material. The hues of the brass perfectly complement the white shade, when the lamp is turned both on and off. As Johansson-Pape said: "A lamp is not the actual purpose, but more like an instrument. It must fulfil its purpose as a provider of light, but at the same time, it must also satisfy the aesthetic demands. A good light fixture must be simple, and its structure and function must be both neat and correct". There is no better proof of her commitment to this statement than this lamp. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Dimensions: 20.86 in Ø x 11.81 in H 53 cm Ø x 30 cm H About the designer: Lisa Johansson-Pape graduated as a furniture designer in 1927. Her career as a designer was long and wide-ranged. Johansson-Pape's furniture was very functional. After graduating in 1927 from the Central School of Arts and Crafts she went on to work for Kylmäkoski designing furniture. In 1933, she joined the Friends of Finnish Handicraft. She designed furniture for Stockmann in 1937 and in 1942 she designed for the Stockmann owned lighting factory Orno. The materials of the luminaires were enamelled metal, acrylic and glass. The technical functionality and practicality of the luminaire was a priority in Johansson-Pape's design. Her attention turned towards lighting, and she co-founded the Illuminating Engineering Society of Finland, and she became the artistic director of the Friends of Finnish Handicraft from 1951 to 1985. She designed the lumieres and lighting solutions for several large spaces in Finland, such as hospitals, churches and ships. Johansson-Pape served as the artistic director of ‘Friends of Finnish Handicrafts’. She was also known as a designer of textiles, rugs and carpets. Johansson-Pape also created installations for 150 churches, including Eckerö Church, Helsinki Children’s Hospital, a rheumatic clinic, and for the ships Ilmatar, Aallotar, Finnpartner, Finnhansa and the icebreaker Karhu. Lisa Johansson-Pape's works have represented Finland in several international exhibitions since the 1930s. At the Milan Triennial in 1951, her lamps received a silver medal and at the 1954 Triennial a gold medal. Johansson-Pape was awarded the ProFinlandia Medal in 1957.

Rauni Peippo "Apila" Stool for Stockmann Orno, Finland 1960s
By Orno Stockmann
Located in Utrecht, NL
This famous pine stool by Finnish interior designer Rauni Peippo is the most famous model from the ‘Apila’ set, that contains a table and bar stools as well. It is one of those models that is immediately recognizable thanks to its shape. Finnish design is appreciated around the world for its minimalistic appearance, playful forms and strict functionalism. After Finland became independent, a dialogue with nature was to become the prime force in the ongoing evolution of Finnish design. This relationship with nature was much in evidence in 20th century Finnish design, which actively expanded on the metaphors and motifs therein. This progression is evident in this iconic stool. “Apila” means “clover” in Finnish, which comes as no surprise; the four leaf clover-shaped seat is carved from pine wood, enhancing the already organic impression of this model. It is infinitely stylish, with sleek tapered legs that counterbalance the round, soft edges of the body. The design dates to the mid-century and the first manufacturer was Stockmann Orno, a manufacturer with a history that dates back to 1862. (It is still the largest department store in the Nordic countries.) This stool was previously misattributed to fellow Finnish designer, Lisa Johansson-Pape, but is now well-documented. Thanks to its sturdy construction and undeniable style, this ‘Apila’ stool...
