Monumental Antique French 24 lights Chandelier in Gilt Bronze and Crystal
About the Item
A grand and richly decorated French chandelier, crafted around 1880. This impressive piece is a fine example of late 19th-century French lighting design, where technical sophistication meets refined ornamentation. The chandelier boasts a commanding presence and is lavish in both form and materials.
The frame is made of fire-gilt bronze (bronze doré), a high-quality gilding technique where gold is applied to bronze using heat and mercury. This results in a deep, warm golden tone that has retained its rich luster for over a century. The frame is adorned with classic decorative motifs, including stylized flowers, acanthus leaves, and pomegranates—symbols of abundance and eternity in 19th-century decorative arts.
The lighting is arranged over three tiers, with a total of 24 light points. Originally designed for candlelight, the chandelier was later expertly converted to electric lighting. The transition was made with great care, preserving the original aesthetic. The sockets were adapted and fitted with candle-style sleeves that blend seamlessly into the historic design.
The chandelier is lavishly hung with a wide array of hand-cut crystals, including prism-shaped drops, almond-shaped pendeloques, and faceted crystal balls. These elements brilliantly catch and refract the light, enhancing the chandelier’s monumental character. Its vertical, tiered structure adds volume and elegance, making this piece ideal for a grand foyer, stairwell, or high-ceilinged salon.
Condition:
The chandelier is in excellent condition. The original gilding is beautifully preserved, and the crystal drops are complete and clear. The fixture has been rewired to meet modern safety standards and is ready for installation. One of the crystal drip pans is broken and missing a segment. However, this imperfection has been turned inward and is not visible when the chandelier is installed.
An exceptional and opulent statement piece that brings not only light but also a rich sense of history and grandeur to any space.
