About the Item

A palatial and large antique Russian Neoclassical gilt bronze and crystal chandelier. The chandelier is arranged in multiple tiers, incorporating a complex structure of ormolu-mounted elements, cut crystal drops, and enameled porcelain vases. The upper crown is formed by a gilt bronze circlet enriched with oval faceted crystal inserts, from which hang rows of tapering prisms. Rising from this section are curving fern-like branches made from beaded crystal rods, each suspending large faceted crystal drops. Beneath this, a polychrome enameled porcelain urn with twin handles is mounted centrally, decorated with floral and trellis patterns in green, yellow, and pink. The middle section of the chandelier is composed of a large circular gilt bronze frame, suspended on heavy chains, also adorned with inset faceted crystals and mounted with alternating bands of small polychrome enamel beads. Rows of elongated cut crystal pendants hang below, forming a dense curtain of prisms. Extending outward are scrolling candle arms, each terminating in a candle socket with ormolu drip pans and hung with additional cut crystal drops. Draped strands of faceted crystal beads connect between the arms, centering in large pendalogues below. The lower portion is further enriched with cascading prisms arranged in multiple concentric layers, culminating in a faceted crystal terminal. The chandelier is designed in the Russian Neoclassical style, characterized by its integration of gilt bronze, crystal, and polychrome enamel elements. Chandeliers of this form were produced in the late 18th to early 19th century, often for palaces and important interiors, combining Western European Neoclassical design with Russian decorative traditions. The use of enameled porcelain urns within the structure, together with the elaborate gilt bronze mounts and cut crystal prisms, reflects the grandeur and decorative vocabulary of Russian imperial interiors.
