'Lampione' Floor Lamp by Fabio Lenci for DH Guzzini, Italy, 1968, Original Label
$10,000

About
Dramatic biomorphic 'Lampione' floor lamp designed by Fabio Lenci in 1968 for DH Guzzini (Design House Guzzini), Italy. The 'Lampione' floor lamp is a rare find today and its huge biomorphic form Silhouette creates a very powerful visual impact in any room.
This is a very fine early example which still retains the early production 'DH Guzzini' manufacturer's label, please see image 3, and black internal model number label to the underside of the weighted base which keeps the lamp stable despite its height and large overhang. Importantly the original rotating dimmer switch is still working which is a real bonus, in fact most people do not know about this somewhat hidden feature, the chrome plastic ring that is situated half way down the stem of the lamp (please see image 8) operates the dimmer, you rotate the ring to adjust the level of light to suit the mood required. The moulded plexiglass diffuser is also still in excellent shape with no cracks, chips or heat damage. The lamp uses a single incandescent (screw thread) light bulb which can be substituted for a modern LED bulb.
Lenci originally designed 'Lampione' for use as outdoor lighting, street lights, garden lighting etc hence its huge scale, DH Guzzini persuaded him to add a base to his original design so it could also be used indoors. Please see original black and white sketches for the design of the indoor version from the IGuzzini archive.
Lenci explains in an interview " Before 'Guzzini' I worked for 'Bayer' and in this company I used a material that was called BAYDUR, polyurethane foam with a compact rigid skin, which allowed you to make pure and simple but also very special shapes. I already made some garden furniture and when I started working for 'Guzzini' I spontaneously thought of this material. So 'Lampione' was the result of an earlier experience. The lamp is called 'Lampione' (street lamp) because I expected that this lamp would be used outdoors, in a garden or along a path, Baydur is especially suitable to use outdoors, if not for the electrical system you could even use it underwater , it is light and water resistant. After a while 'Guzzini ' asked if I could design a base so the lamp could also be used indoors. But the lamp is that big because it was originally intended for outdoor usage.
Several black 'Lampione' lamps graced the terrace of the fabulous space age 'Villa Benedetti' located in Ascoli Piceno in Italy which even featured an flying saucer shaped 'disco' room. Sadly the villa was bought by a developer and then destroyed to be replaced by a block of generic apartments. Please see image 7 which illustrates a black 'lampione' lamp on the terrace of the villa just prior to the demolition.
'Lampione' is a classic of space age design and has featured in several classic sci fiilms and tv series , please see image 20 which illustrates a white 'lampione' in an episode of the classic British Science fiction TV series 'Blakes 7'
