About the Item

Massive antique crystal floor standing candelabrum by Baccarat French, Early 20th Century Height 360cm, diameter 120cm This grand and exceptionally crafted floor candelabrum is a remarkable work by Baccarat, one of France’s most esteemed crystal manufacturers. Modelled after the celebrated ‘Candélabre de la Tsarine’ and the ‘Candélabre dit du Tsar’, this breathtaking piece pays tribute to Baccarat’s illustrious legacy of Russian imperial patronage. At the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris, Tsar Alexander II (1818–1881) was captivated by Baccarat’s refined artistry and subsequently ordered a selection of crystal creations for the imperial residences. Among these was a stunning candelabrum designed specifically for his wife, Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna (1824-1880), earning the name ‘Candélabre de la Tsarine’. Later, during the 1878 Paris Exposition, Baccarat unveiled a monumental seventy-nine-light candelabrum that caught the attention of Tsar Nicholas II (1868–1918) during his 1896 visit to the city. He commissioned multiple versions of the design for his royal homes. The current example features 32 scrolling crystal arms, each supporting finely detailed bobeches with petal-shaped rims. Suspended from each bobeche are faceted crystal drops and bead chains, enhancing the piece’s sparkling allure. Covering the light bulbs are elegant candle cups, each fitted with beautifully etched glass shades adorned with graceful foliate patterns that radiate charm when illuminated. Above the lighting array rises a decorative crystal element edged like a flower petal and crowned with a striking spear-shaped finial. The central stem is composed of a series of intricately cut glass forms arranged in a harmonious vertical rhythm. The entire composition stands on a wide, circular socle base, richly embellished with precision-cut glass motifs, reinforcing its regal stature. A dazzling combination of size, craftsmanship, and historical connection, this Baccarat candelabrum is more than a lighting fixture - it is a statement of refined luxury and a timeless centrepiece for a sophisticated interior.

Cristalleries de Baccarat: The origins of the manufacture, also known as the Compagnie des Cristalleries de Baccarat, can be traced to 1764. On this year, King Louis XV accorded to the Bishop of Metz permission to establish a glass factory on his land, in the small village of Baccarat in Lorraine, in order to compete with the celebrated Bohemian production. Lorraine is traditionally a glass-making region, due to the abundance of silica in the soil and due to its large forests, which supplied the wood to fuel the ovens. Francois-Eugène de Fontenay, who joined the company in 1841, discovered that the addition of nickel oxide in the manufacturing process resulted in a perfectly clear product, 'crystal glass', that was free of discoloration and that imitated precious rock crystal. For this discovery, the Baccarat company was awarded a gold medal at the French Expositions des Produits de l'Industrie in 1844. Continually experimenting with their manufacturing process, the quality of Baccarat's 'crystal glass' improved, reaching the highest level by the end of the century. The Baccarat manufacture rapidly became a leading producer with highly skilled maître-verriers. In 1823, Baccarat participated for the first time at the National Exhibition. Louis XVIII was seduced by the quality of the pieces presented, which received the praise of the jury and the first gold medal. As a result of their success and innovations, the manufacture gradually consolidated its reputation, which allowed it to dominate the French market. The Russian fascination for Baccarat: In 1867, Tsar Alexander II visited the Exposition Universelle in Paris and fell in awe in the sight of Baccarat’s stand...
