About the Item
This rare 1920s Ruba Rombic flush mount glass shade, designed by Reuben Haley for the Consolidated Glass Company, exemplifies the sharp, angular cubist motifs that defined Art Deco design. Molded in etched beige glass with striking geometric relief, this piece captures the bold spirit of early modernism and American innovation in decorative arts.
Reuben Haley was a leading designer of the period, renowned for pushing the boundaries of commercial glassware with his avant-garde Ruba Rombic line, introduced by Consolidated Glass in 1928. The company, based in Coraopolis near Pittsburgh, then a thriving hub of American glassmaking, produced some of the most experimental and refined pressed glass of the era. Haley’s work stands alongside that of contemporaries like René Lalique in France and Walter Dorwin Teague in the U.S., who shared an affinity for merging functionality with abstract modern forms.
Ruba Rombic glassware was considered radical for its time: its fractured, crystalline form was inspired by Cubism and Futurism. While initially polarizing, the line gained popularity through high-end department stores such as B. Altman, Macy’s, and Marshall Field’s, which introduced design-forward American consumers to this sculptural style.
Flush mount shades in the Ruba Rombic pattern are particularly scarce, as most surviving pieces are vases, compotes, and decanters. This ceiling-mounted example showcases the design’s versatility and would have been a luxury fixture in a modernist interior of the time. It remains a collector’s prize due to both its rarity and its uncompromising visual impact.
The shade is in overall good vintage condition. There is some minor wear to the neck portion of the glass, which is not visible once installed. Please note, this listing is for the shade only. A compatible lighted flush mount fixture is not included but is broadly available from most lighting suppliers.
