Art Deco Flush Mount Lighting

ART DECO STYLE

Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

ORIGINS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold geometric lines and forms, floral motifs
  • Use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood
  • Metal accents, shimmering mirrored finishes
  • Embellishments made from exotic animal hides, inlays of mother-of-pearl or ivory

ART DECO FURNITURE DESIGNERS TO KNOW

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.

Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.

The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)

Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.

From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The vintage Art Deco furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes dressers, coffee tables, decorative objects and more.

Enormous 30Ø Flush Mount / Pendant with Stunning Full Moon-Like Alabaster Shade
Located in Lisse, NL
One of the largest, most stylish and truly lunar-like alabaster lights. This rare and extra large, six-light alabaster flush mount also is of a beautiful, timeless design. Besides its extraordinary size, what makes this alabaster shade stand out from anything we ever saw are two things: 1. This is one of only very few alabaster shades that is not polished. The result of that is that absolutely nothing reflects in this shade. When other alabaster lights are not switched on there almost always are colors (from other items in the room) or lights from outside or from other lamps being reflected in the shade. The unique upside of this non-reflecting shade is it always looks extremely 'calm and serene', because you see nothing but the natural and beautiful alabaster and its black veins. 2. Anyone who has ever really looked at a full moon (or at photos of a full moon), knows that a large part of a full moon is not white, but it looks like there is a minor shade over a large part of the moon. And for some inexplicable reason this extra large lunar-like alabaster shade has that exact same pattern. Mother nature therefor could not have done us a bigger favour. This unique and timeless alabaster flush mount is bound to light up someone's days and evenings very soon, also, because it is in excellent from top to bottom. Besides the huge 'lunar-shade', the striking black veins that are evenly spread around the top edge too contrast even more when the light is switched on. Also, because the already beautiful alabaster then turns into this full moon-like white. What makes this shade even more amazing are the more translucent veins and patches, they too create patterns and effects that only Mother Nature is capable of creating. The ceiling plate of this fixture simply needs to be screwed tight onto the ceiling and then the rest of the canopy and gallery (or shade holder) can be attached/screwed on. Finally, the shade can be attached too. For our photos we usually don't screw flush mounts tight to our ceilings, because after 20 lights we would have no ceiling left. We screwed the ceiling plate onto a circular piece of wood and into the top of that piece of wood we screwed a metal ring so that we could hang this flush-mount from the ceiling. Therefor our presentation of this spectacular flush mount is far from perfect, but we are certain that our private and especially our trade clients get a very good idea of the beauty, unicity and style of this timeless flush mount AND of how great it will look when mounted flush to a ceiling. The golden colored, metal and brass gallery and finial at the bottom are original to this light, but if you would want those in a different color (or, for example, mat black) then that could be changed/spray-painted. Finally, this large shade is so structurally strong that it even rings like a bell when you strike it. This XXL and six-light flush mount too is wired to the highest standard for safe and immediate usage in the USA as well. In our view this very large and timeless alabaster flush mount could be the ideal light fixture for any room in the house that you can think of. So if you like this unique and extra large alabaster pendant...
