Ingrid Atterberg 'Inca' Ceramic Table Lamp, Upsala Ekeby, 1947
About the Item
This striking ceramic table lamp was designed by Ingrid Atterberg and produced by the Swedish company Upsala Ekeby in 1947. The underside of the lamp is marked with the model number 518 and bears the 'Ekeby' signature. It is part of Atterberg's iconic 'Inca' series.
The substantial earthenware base features a beautiful orange/terracotta color with vertical incisions, finished in a white glaze. The empire-shaped shade has been renewed in a smooth ivory fabric, complementing the warm tones of the base.
The lamp is in overall good condition. The shade has been replaced, and the wiring has been updated. It is currently fitted with a 220V European plug and a standard E26/E27 bulb fitting.
Biography:
Ingrid Atterberg (1920-2008) was born in the northern Sweden city of Harnosand. She studied at Slojdforeningens School in Gothenburg. Ingrid came to the Upsala-Ekeby Pottery factory in 1944, staying on until 1964. She became one of the foremost Swedish designers of the period.
Ingrid constantly experimented with different glazes and techniques. She found the work process inspiring, and thought failures often gave birth to new ideas. Her austere, bold designs of ornamental pieces and everyday goods led to significant artistic and commercial success. During Ingrid’s time at Upsala-Ekeby, she produced over 100 series, of which Inca is one of her best known.
Other ceramicists of the period include Berndt Friberg, Axel Salto, Wilhelm Kåge, Lucie Rie, Hans Cooper and Carl-Harry Stålhane .
