Martz / Marshall Studios Ceramic Table Lamps—Blue Glaze Two Piece Design

About the Item

What is it? — This pair of Gordon and Jane Martz lamps features a glossy sapphire blue glaze with a speckled, mottled surface. Upon close inspection, the glaze reveals a subtle interplay of a core blue color and darker speckled dots, adding depth and character to the ceramic forms. The lamp is composed of two separate ceramic sections that fit together perfectly. Each ceramic base is completed with a thick and substantial walnut base. A short, tapered walnut neck elevates the shades above the base, and the entire ensemble finished off with iconic Martz finials. The lamps have all-new hardware, including the cord, harp, and socket. These are a larger pair that work wonderfully on a nightstands, end tables, or a larger credenza Condition — One of the two lamps has a hairline crack in the upper section of the lamp. The ceramic is structurally sound, and the crack is oriented at the backside of the lamp, so visibility of it will be minimal in most situations. I believe the ceramic to be 100% structurally sound and the crack is merely cosmetic. I'd avoid running anything that could snag any part of the crack over the surface to avoid removing the finish. All of the wood parts have been expertly sanded and refinished. All of the hardware including the socket, cords, and harps are new. Dimensions — 32" to the top of the shade 18" shade maximum width 18" ceramic base height 24" total height (ceramic base + wooden cap/base) Martz / Marshall Studios 101 — Jane Marshall—whose grandmother founded Marshall Studios in 1922—married Gordon Martz in 1951, one year before the couple graduated from New York’s Alfred University. Returning to Veedersburg to work in the family business, they brought with them a passion for contemporary, hand-designed stoneware. The Martz’s work revolutionized Marshall Studios. What began as a lampshade manufacturing company became a hub of handcrafted modern lamps and accessories. Martz lamp bases were slip-cast for mass production and later hand-decorated using techniques such as incising, dipping, and brushing to create a variety of patterns and colors. Martz lamps have been featured in the Museum of Modern Art, numerous private collections, and are highly sought after in the French modernist auction scene.
