Rare Fong Chow "Gulfstream" Lamp

Buyer Protection Guaranteed

This rare lamp retaining the original linen shade with matching blue trims and finial is about as good as it gets. Carefully glazed in the matte finish "gulfstream" pattern and coloration, this is mounted on the original grain painted metal base.
This is such a rare form and to find so intact is such a treat.
Designed by Fong Chow and decorated by Alfred Glidden.
Alfred Glidden was the founder of Glidden Pottery. A unique stoneware bodied artware that was produced in Alfred, New York from 1940 to 1958.
In 1951 Fong Chow completed a program at the Boston Museum school, majoring in ceramics, with a minor in painting and photography. He then was accepted into the ceramic program at Alfred University. He was hired by Glidden Pottery in Alfred in the role of designer and glaze developer, circa 1952. Some of his Glidden Pottery designs won him a Museum of Modern Art coveted "Good Design" award. After Glidden Pottery closed in 1958, Chow accepted a job at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as assistant curator of ceramics in the Asian Department. As his career progressed at the Metropolitan, he maintained his own ceramic studio.
