About the Item

An exceptionally rare pair of 1950s opalescent Murano lamps by the esteemed Barovier & Toso, distinguished by their unique one-piece blown glass bodies. Unlike typical Murano lamps from the era—often assembled from multiple sections bolted to a base—these lamps were crafted by blowing a single large bubble of glass, then slightly flattened to create an elegant oval cross-section. The tops and bottoms have been expertly cut and polished to transform these exquisite glass forms into functional lamps. This innovative technique allows the glass to rest directly on the table, creating a seamless, modern silhouette that was groundbreaking for its time. Founded in 1295, Barovier & Toso is one of the oldest and most prestigious glassmaking firms in Murano, renowned for its innovation, craftsmanship, and artistry. The company has been at the forefront of Murano’s legacy, producing some of the most iconic glass designs and pushing the boundaries of technique and style. Murano glass itself has a storied history dating back to the 13th century, with the Venetian island becoming synonymous with exquisite glass craftsmanship, intricate techniques, and bold experimentation. Murano artisans have historically been revered for their mastery of color, form, and light—qualities vividly evident in these lamps. This design is among the most uncommon produced by Barovier & Toso in the mid-20th century. To date, only two other pairs of this specific model have been documented—both priced well over €20,000 in exclusive Italian galleries. A stunning testament to Murano’s mastery and Barovier & Toso’s pioneering artistry, these lamps offer collectors a rare opportunity to own a distinctive and historically significant example of postwar Italian glass design.

Gold Leaf

Table Lamp by Ugo Zaccagnini
By Ugo Zaccagnini
Located in Kilmarnock, VA
A beautifully proportioned and sculptural table lamp by Ugo Zaccagnini, featuring a soft robin’s egg blue crackled glaze with subtle tonal variation and surface depth. The gentle craquelure enhances the organic curves of the ceramic body, lending the lamp a tactile quality and a sense of quiet movement. The original rosewood cap and base provide a rich material contrast—dark, refined, and architectural against the delicate surface of the glaze. This interplay of texture and tone reflects the studio’s deep sensitivity to form and finish. Zaccagnini, one of Italy’s most respected 20th-century ceramicists, worked at the intersection of tradition and modernity. Known for his sculptural forms and refined glazes, his work was widely exhibited and retailed through top galleries and luxury decorators in postwar Europe and the United States. This lamp’s silhouette is bold yet fluid—equally at home in a richly layered interior or a clean-lined, organic modernist space. The cool, pale blue makes it a versatile design element: it can act as a subtle pop of color in a neutral room, or as a cool, calming contrast against deeper hues and dark woods. Designers such as Gio Ponti, Billy Baldwin, or Kalef Alaton...
