Magnificent 18th Century Chinese Chippendale Ho-Ho Bird Carved Giltwood Mirror
About the Item
A superb 18th century Chinese Chippendale carved giltwood mirror of exceptional detail.
The pierced foliate frame with climbing roses on architectural column elements of pagoda form, with a central Pagoda crest with stylized icicles above a large rose and flanked by a pair of Ho-Ho birds perched on C scrolls with icicle motifs. The center base with an attractive reticulated cartouche centered by a Venus shell surrounded by C scrolls and topped by a curved foliate frond.
The mythical Ho-Ho bird is said to bring good fortune, longevity and wisdom, all highly desirable elements of a well-appointed home. The motif originally appeared in Asian decorative arts- ceramics, embroidery, woodwork. English 18th century cabinet makers began to include the Ho-Ho on the more prestigious commissions of furniture and especially mirrors, where the design would be most prominent and aesthetically pleasing. When placed at the crest of a mirror, the birds, with their curving necks, elongated beaks and flowing tails, visually lift the composition to an elegant, refined level.
The icicles or possibly stalactites, reference the water element which attracts wealth and abundance.
This mirror is in very good condition with beautiful original gilding, fine detail and exceptional design.
If desired, the upper portion of the original silvered mirror glass panel which shows age appropriate wear may be replaced on request.

- Antique Large Carved Oak Figure of Saint Anthony of Padua, 18th-19th CenturyLocated in New York, NYFine hand carved oak figure of Saint Anthony of Padua Late 18th- Early 19th Century Saint Anthony is depicted with his head raised, mouth ajar, as if in the process of speaking. He stands upright wearing his traditional Franciscan robes and holding open a book. Beautifully carved with high level of detail, unusual for oak pieces. Oak is a dense hardwood which is difficult to carve and it's rare to see this level of detail in an early oak sculpture. Saint Anthony is the Patron Saint of lost things. While living at the monastery, he had a treasured book which contained psalms and personal observations. His book was stolen by a man who decided to leave the monastery and Anthony ferverently prayed for its return as the cost of a new book would have been beyond his means. The thief repented and returned the book which is believed to be preserved at the Franciscan Library in Bologna. He is one of the most popular Catholic saints...Category
