An 18th C. Italian Baroque Period Carved & Giltwood Mirror with Inlaid Hardstone
About the Item
An Incredible and Rare 18th-Century Italian Baroque Carved & Giltwood Mirror with Inlaid Hardstones. The oval-shaped frame is richly ornamented with a winged cherub mask at the crest. The border is decorated with carved foliate and fruit motifs, including grape clusters and ribbon elements, over a gilt/green ground. The frame is further embellished with a series of inset hardstone plaques, including agate, jasper, and other semi-precious stones, each enclosed in a beaded giltwood border.
The hardstone inlays are arranged symmetrically around the frame, set within individually carved and gilded bezels. The lower section features additional carved foliate details extending toward the base. The painted green ground is visible between the gilded elements, providing contrast to the relief-carved details. The frame’s surface shows variations in texture, with areas of high-relief carving and recessed sections around the inlays.
