Antique 19th-century Dated French Wheatered Gold Leaf Gilt Louis Philippe Mirror
About the Item
This antique French mirror, dated April 22, 1882, is a characteristic piece in the Louis Philippe style. The mirror features the typical rounded upper corners and is entirely gilded with gold leaf. Over time, the gold has worn slightly in places, revealing the warm red layer underneath, known as the bolus, which gives the frame a vivid, timeworn appearance that harmonizes beautifully with the original mirror plate. This plate was silvered using the traditional silver nitrate technique and shows authentic signs of age in the form of small black spots. The frame is further refined with a delicate floral engraving on the highest part of the profile and a subtle pearl beading that borders the glass. The Louis Philippe style, which emerged around 1830 and is named after King Louis-Philippe I, is known for its elegant, understated design and flowing lines, all of which are well represented in this mirror. On the back of the mirror, an original workshop stamp reads: “Miroiterie A. Lemaire, 10 Rue de Charonne, Paris.” This Parisian workshop was active in the 19th century and renowned for producing high-quality mirrors, confirming the authenticity and craftsmanship of this exceptional piece.
