About the Item
On offer here is a beautiful small antique mirror that was made in France in the second half of the 19th century, around 1880. The mirror frame has the upper rounded corners typical for Louis Philippe mirrors. A delicate pearl beading surrounds the original glass. De mirror is in a beautiful antique condition. Once completely gold leaf gilt, the gold has now faded. Small stripes of gold can be seen around the mirror. This is where the leaves of gold overlapped and the gold layer was double its thickness and therefore remained until now. Gold leaf was glued to the frame with a water-based glue. Extensive cleaning with a moist cloth over the years has led to this distressed look. The mirror now shows the red bole layer and the umber layer, which functioned as a basecoat. Also by polishing the gold leaf, the color of the undercoat shined through, thus giving the gold a slightly different appearance. The worn gold color, combined with the natural earth colors of the undercoat, gives this piece a fantastic natural appearance.
The authentic mirror glass is a silver nitrate silvered glass plate and shows a few scratches and spots. The plate was removed from the frame and the whole piece was gently cleaned. The glass was firmly reinserted and the authentic pine back cladding was reinstalled. The mirror is clean, without damage, and ready for use.
