French Wall mirror, carved and gilt wood, Napoleon III

About the Item

Unique and gorgeous French mirror style and era Napoleon III, in carved and gilded wood with fine gold burnished with agate stone. Rectangular profile with the two upper corners rounded, and in its center rises an exquisite ornate copete or finish. The bottom width is simple and smooth, while the rest of the frame is adorned with 4 differentiated fringes. From inside to outside: a first narrow and smooth stripe, the second features a string of pearls (decorative element of classical inspiration based on balls arranged sequentially). The third and widest, a set of incomers and outgoers that is arranged horizontally and creates a subtle effect of lights and shadows and, finally, a fourth starring a loop or cord that ascends helically. It retains the original crystal, with the beautiful charred effect, typical of its age and use. Style and era Napoleon III or Second Empire The style Napoleon III or Second Empire receives its name because it was born in France at that time. Strictly speaking, the Second Empire was proclaimed in 1852 and ended in 1870, led by Louis Napoleon Bonaparte as emperor of the French, although in the artistic sense it extends a few more years (until 1880). This style was well received by the French bourgeoisie. The emperor himself was involved in the artistic development of the time, although more associated with architecture. However, it is to Empress Eugenia that the evolution of the decorative arts is due. Although it is inspired by the styles of the past, starting with Classical Antiquity, the Renaissance, even in Louis XVI, much loved by Eugenia, the most representative characteristic of the style is sumptuousness and ostentation, always aspiring to show wealth and opulence. It is not a style designed specifically for the Second Empire, but a recovery of the various great French styles of previous centuries, a kind of compilation of French decorative trends. Special reference is made to Louis XIV, Louis XV, Baroque and Rococo, and gradually Louis XVI, of eclectic basis. In short, the decorative styles that had positioned France at the forefront of interior design and furniture design in Europe, both for quality and for originality and beauty.
