Gold Leaf Painted and Carved Mirror, Early 19th Century French, Louis XVI
About the Item
Beautifully crafted by hand in the early 19th century, this antique mirror is made of gold leaf laid over a beautiful series of carvings in a wooden frame. The frame of the mirror is embellished with various intricate swirls and designs. The bottom of the frame has two finials, one in each corner. On each side of the top of the frame, a double set of carved tassels hangs down. The crown of the mirror is highly decorated with a bushel of wheat in the center, a symbol of bounty and plenty. Garland is draped on top of the wheat and swirled around a pair of blooming flowers, again representing plenty.
