About the Item

Amazing and Exceptional large mirror by the prestigious Italian firm Ongaro e Fuga. The structure is composed of a superposition of geometric shapes: first a rectangle with chamfered corners, then a rectangle, and above it, a frame with curved (or mixed-linear) shapes at both the bottom and top, topped with an exquisite crest. All the profiles are decorated with blue glass appliqués in the shape of a single six-petaled flower, straight rope-like pieces, and other decorative motifs. The insets are acid-etched in stylized plant forms. The flower on the crest is more exuberant, with various shapes and leaves framing it. The back is made of solid wood. Hand-blown glass on the island of Murano. Murano glass originates from artisans who fled Constantinople and settled in the Venice area, where their art achieved great social importance in the 10th century. However, at the end of the 13th century, fires in the wooden factories were frequent, so the authorities decided to order the glassmakers to settle on the nearby island of Murano to ensure that potential fires would not affect the rest of the city. For centuries, the art of glassmaking has been preserved with great caution. Glass is made of silica, which dissolves at high temperatures, between 1200 and 1400°C, until it forms a paste. After reducing the temperature to 800°C, the liquid glass is collected at the end of the blowpipe by one of the Master's assistants, the "servente." During this procedure, the "servente" coils the tube in the furnace and then lifts it out of the glass, rotating the tube to remove any excess. The fumes from this process are highly toxic, so workers are only allowed to work for 25 years. Various materials, such as precious metal leaves, thin glass rods, or coloring pastes, can be added to the top of the bubble for ornamental purposes. The glass is then stretched, crushed, pinched, ironed, scratched, elongated, and cut. The masters rotate the glass on the tubes, forming symmetrical circles in the air, thus obtaining the desired shape, similar to the pieces of our mirrors. Once the piece is finished, it is annealed, gradually lowering the temperature to prevent the glass from exploding. Once cooled, the cold polishing phase begins. Ongaro e Fuga The Ongaro e Fuga brand originated with the marriage of Franco Fuga and Tulia Ongaro, both descendants of important Venetian artisans. Among this talented lineage, Angelo Fuga, a master glassmaker since the mid-19th century, stood out. Inspired by Angelo Fuga's legacy and a deep interest in keeping Venetian artisan traditions alive, the couple founded the brand in 1954. Their journey began with their specialization in the treatment of glass to create mirrors. Over time, they have innovated and incorporated new pieces (consoles, tables, cabinets, etc.). Currently, the company is run by the founders' three sons, Bruno, Giuliano, and Francesco, who have renewed the brand by combining modern and traditional techniques, in a kind of vindication of Venetian tradition and its techniques. In addition, today the company collaborates with other houses and artists, working on designs that range from the most traditional to the most modern. They stand out for their luxury, elegance, decorative profusion, and attention to detail, all of which results in absolute pieces of art, as unique as they are beautiful.
