About the Item
Exceptional and very rare rustic tramp art wall mirror from the late 19th century, originating from Austria, circa 1870.
This unique mirror impresses with its exceptionally designed frame, decorated with carefully crafted, carved recesses and is artfully composed of hundreds of individual, precisely hand-carved pieces of wood.
The corners reveal a beautiful pyramid structure and, in combination with the round elements on each corner, create a spectacular design. Accentuated by the dark brown to black lacquered wood, this beautiful tramp art mirror presents itself as an absolutely exceptional appearance. A unique antique wall mirror with authentic charm.
Tramp art is a style of woodworking that emerged in America in the second half of the 19th century. Some of the defining characteristics of tramp art include chip or notch carving, the reclamation of cheap or available wood, such as that from cigar boxes and shipping crates, the use of simple tools such as pocket knives and the layering of materials into geometric shapes by means of glue or nails.
A beautiful form of folk art, anyone could make a tramp art object with what they had on hand, hence it is very rare to find 2 identical pieces, these unique items have a high collector's value and are highly sought after.
The mirror plate and the rear wooden plate are not the original, but it is also an old mirror from around the 1950s, it has a very nice weathered appearance and is decoratively spotted, which is very common with old mirrors, the frame also has a very nice age patina.
The object is in excellent antique condition, with signs of age and use consistent with its age, some small parts of the frame are missing, such as a piece at the bottom left, but that gives the mirror its character and story, the mirror glass has some superficial scratches and stains, check the photos for more details!

Large antique narrow gilded mirror from the 19th century, completely in classical baroque style, France circa 1870.
The mirror still has its original mirror plate that is decoratively weathered and mocked, which is very desirable, the frame is decorated with acanthus leaves all around, mainly decorated very ornately at the top and bottom, unfortunately the mirror was once painted over with gold paint, which does damage the authenticity somewhat, under the paint is the original gold leaf. The back of the mirror is finished with planks, as was customary at that time.
A nice extra is that the planks on the back are covered with antique French newspapers...
