Large, French Hand Made, Surrealist Plaster Mirror, Attributed Serge Roche, 1930

About the Item

Rare, large, dramatic, hand-made French Plaster Mirror attributed to Serge Roche. The mirror / wall sculpture is in an organic, free-form, Surrealist style conveying drama, illusion and mystery. It is formed by hand with deep ridges revealing the rough, intimate, sensuous qualities of the plaster. Sixteen mirror elements of varying sizes and shapes are inset into the plaster frame and continue the ongoing journey into consciousness. Serge Roche was one of the leading innovators of the French post Art-Deco period of the 1930's. He was deeply influenced by surrealism and his works in plaster and mirrors are his most important creations. Additional background: Alberto and Diego Giacometti also produced surrealist creations in plaster for the atelier of Jean-Michel Frank in Paris in the early 1930's.
