About the Item

An unusual Irish George lII cut-glass mirror. Early 19th century. The arched top mirror plate is set within a frame of faceted blue and white glass studs with applied gilding. This jewel-like mirror is typical of Irish cut-glass mirrors of the late 18th and 19th century, some of which were hung with chandeliers. County Waterford was famous for its glass production in the period. The Waterford Glasshouse was known particularly for producing these distinctive mirrors. For other examples of the form, see those illustrated in D. Westropp, Irish Glass, Dublin, 1920 (Rep. 1978), pl. XXVIII and The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture, New Haven and London, 2007, p.269, fig. 254. Condition: The glass studs and mirror plate all appear to be the original. Oxidisation and surface scratches to the mirror commensurate with age and type.
