About the Item

French Mirror Attributed to the Ateliers de Marolles, 1950s Striking mid-century French mirror attributed to the renowned Ateliers de Marolles. The rectangular frame in patinated iron is adorned with a playful procession of stylized animals – horses, camels and elephants – cut in relief, creating a sculptural and decorative presence. A rare and highly decorative piece, blending primitive inspiration with refined French craftsmanship. Perfect as a statement piece in an eclectic or modern interior. Jean Touret was a French sculptor and designer born in 1916, in Lassay-les-Châteaux, a small town west of Paris, France, and died in 2004. Touret began his career working for an insurance company, but soon developed a passion for art. After work, he took evening drawing classes to perfect his skills. After the war, he returned to France, where he opened his studio Atelier de Marolles. Over the years, he designed and produced a number of pieces including tables, lamps and sideboards. Touret also worked in metal, designing screens in zinc and copper. He is also known for having designed Notre-Dame's monumental bronze altar, which was installed in 1981.
