About the Item
Antique French gilt bronze and mahogany bed by Paul Sormani

Decorated with various ormolu (gilt bronze) mounts and beautifully crafted from mahogany, the bed was made in France by Paul Sormai (1817-1877). He was a leadning 19th century cabinetmaker who produced furniture pieces for an elite clientele such as Empress Eugenie. Sormani’s pieces are characterised by their inspiration by the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles, and the bed in Mayfair Gallery’s collection is a superb example of that.
The arched headboard is adorned with a ribbon-tied floral garland, a quiver of arrows as well as a flambeau torch. The front of the footboard is mounted with similar motifs, in addition to floral mounts which frame the exquisite mahogany parquetry.
The headboard and footboard are joined by rectangular stretchers and each includes two fluted pilasters. Intricate ormolu mounts in shapes such as garlands adorn each one. The composition created with the deep brown of mahogany and the shining gold of ormolu is eye-catching and ensures the bed is guaranteed to bring elegance and sophistication to any interior space.
Each part of the bed is stamped with ‘Sormani Paris’ testifying to their renowned Italian maker.

Paul Sormani
Paul Sormani, counted among the most elite Parisian ébénistes of the 19th century, used the foundation of Louis XV and XVI styles for his meubles de luxe (luxurious furnishings).
Sormani received enormous attention as one of Paris’ finest and most influential ébénistes and earned worldwide acclaim by displaying his pieces at many of the world’s leading exhibitions. At the 1867 Exhibition Universelle in Paris the celebrated designer received an award and was described in the exhibition journal as “...a distinguished ébéniste of Paris, whose works deservedly attracted the attention of the public, and received the marked approval of the connoisseur.”
Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, decorated her palaces with beautiful creations by Paul Sormani whose designs were of a select few favored by the Empress. Revivals of Louis XV and XVI pieces were in high demand among affluent Parisians, and Sormani created many of the finest and most important furnishings of the period.

This impressive bed is crafted in the neoclassical style from wood, gilt bronze, and red velvet. The bed features a large, shaped headboard, which is centred with a panel of red floral velvet, with the wooden structure of the headboard mounted with a host of gilt bronze mounts including rosettes and pomegranate finials. The footboard of the bed is similarly wrought and adorned, with the columnar sides set with gilt bronze floral garlands and the wooden surfaces veneered in a manner that reveals the grain of the wood. The sideboards of the bed are finished with red velvet. The bed is stamped for Grohé Frères.
