Armonia Bed Frame by Luciano Frigerio for Frigerio di Desio, 1976

About the Item

An extraordinary and rare bed designed by Luciano Frigerio and produced by the Frigerio di Desio company in the early 1970s, model "Armonia." This striking piece was created by the sculptor-cabinetmaker as a response to the minimalist movement in Milan at the time, which favored cleaner, simpler lines. Frigerio's answer, however, remained true to his signature style: a bold structure featuring solid brass plates, each 0.8 cm thick, composing a rhythmic harmony of movement-hence the name Armonia. The piece comes with its original Certificate of Authenticity issued by the Frigerio family heirs, and was published in Domus No. 556, March 1976, with the magazine page shown in the listing photos. The bed is in excellent condition, with only minimal signs of age consistent with its 50-year history. After graduating from the Collegio Pio XI with a degree in accounting, he pursued his passions in both furniture design and music composition. During the 1960s, the economic and cultural environment of Brianza provided fertile ground for craftsmanship and enterprise. Frigerio seized this opportunity, transforming the family workshop into an internationally recognized design company. He drew inspiration from visits to prestigious workshops and encounters with key figures like Gio Ponti and Franco Albini. In 1973, Frigerio was awarded the title of Commendatore of the Italian Republic in recognition of his contribution to Italian furniture design. The defining feature of Frigerio's career was his dream of creating furniture as unique pieces of art. Supported by a skilled technical team, he launched collections of "Sculpture Furniture in Solid Wood" and "Sculpture Beds in Cast Bronze," offering an exclusive alternative to the mass production of the time. These works embody artisanal mastery and refined materials, positioning them as functional sculptures in the design world. Collaborations with leading Italian architects and designers-including Franco Albini, Sergio Asti, and Paolo Portoghesi-further solidified Frigerio's status. His belief that architects could design unique furniture for high-end cabinetry defined the company's philosophy, centered around signed and numbered one-of-a-kind pieces. Between the 1970s and 1990s, Frigerio opened ten showrooms in Italy's major cities. His contributions were widely recognized, culminating in his 1989 investiture as Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Frigerio's works were awarded at key exhibitions such as the Salone Internazionale del Mobile and Abitare il Tempo, and continue to be exhibited in major galleries in Italy and abroad. Permanent exhibitions in Milan, such as at the Galleria del Sagrato and the Art Gallery on Via Montenapoleone, testify to his enduring presence in the Italian design landscape. His legacy lives on through these exclusive creations, celebrating the union of functionality, beauty, and artisan excellence-and continues to inspire the world of contemporary design.

This brass bed is designed by Luciano Frigerio in the 1970s and it is of fine Italian manufacture. The bed frame is completely made of brass, with 4 square-shaped supporting feet. The legs are connected to each other by two parallel brass bands, creating the footboard and sides of the bed. The headboard of the bed is the real special feature of the structure: it is made through the combination of four wide-bar elements of golden brass. Inserted in the headboard is a square-shaped abstract sculpture, also made entirely of brass, which is very rare and unique. The bed is ideal for furnishing rooms...
