Classical American Federal Gondola Sleigh Bed in Mahogany, Philadelphia, c. 1830
About the Item
An exquisite classical American gondola sleigh bed in fine West Indies mahogany from the Federal period in Philadelphia, circa 1830. Inspired by the aesthetic ideals of ancient Greek & Roman furniture popularized during the Empire & Federal period, this sleigh bed features shaped sideboards with an out-scrolled headboard that is taller than the inward-scrolled footboard, and rests on shaped bracket feet with original casters. The beauty of the wood is enhanced with expert book-matching & through the play of the various grains that are visible throughout. Bed was restored using French polish in our workshop which further highlights the gorgeous choice of woods & the excellent quality of the design & craftsmanship.
