Philadelphia Neoclassical Empire Sofa, Attributable to Joseph Barry, circa 1830

About the Item

Anything but demure, this handsome and beautifully-crafted neoclassical sofa from Philadelphia is very likely the work of prominent cabinetmaker Joseph B. Barry (1757-1839). With workshops in Philadelphia and Baltimore, his clientele included the likes of Thomas Jefferson. Sofa frame is in a fine mahogany and offers dramatic "S" scrolled arms with brass ormolu rondelles with flower of life motif, double-arched pediment top on back crest rail with a carved fan flanked by rope carving over each of two wings with fine ormolu rondelles. Sofa has a rope carving along seat rail and rests on carved hairy paw lion's feet with turned rear feet. Philadelphia, circa 1830. measurements: 90.5 long x 27.5" deep x 40.5" high Seat height 20" Note: You should always request a shipping quote.
