George III Mahogany Four-Poster Bed, Attributed to Gillows of Lancaster

About the Item

A handsome George III mahogany four-poster bed dating to circa 1790 and attributed to Gillows of Lancaster. It is rare to find beds from this period in this large 5ft width and this was probably a special commission for a wealthy family. It had previously been part of the furnishings of Hull Bank House before it was sold in 1936 and moved to The Old Rectory in Winestead where it was featured in the January 1965 issue of Country Life (photo shown). With a reeded cornice with a central tablet to each side supported on elegant tapering foot posts with fluting to the top and reeding to the lower part, ring turned bases and square-section lower posts. It has plain turned tapering posts to the head joined by a timber headboard and stands on white ceramic castors. Unusually for the period this bed has mahogany side-rails rather than oak (Gillows often suggested oak in order to reduce costs), it came to us with a traditional “heavy sail-cloth’ mattress support as used by Gillows. In very good condition with original finish and patina, the cornice is designed to have a pelmet/curtain fitted to both the inside and outside and therefore the lower half of the cornice is deal (pine) (see the photo of bed frame without the pelmet). The headboard is unpadded and the fabric simply tacked/stapled around it. The inner supporting edges of the side rails where the cloth supports were attached are scratched and chipped however will not be visible with the mattress in place. Some knocks and chips to fluting on posts. The price shown is for the bed frame only and although the canopy and hangings shown will be included if desired we recommend that they are replaced along with the fabric on the headboard. Overall width: 63 ¼in (160.5cm) Overall length: 79 ¾in (202.5cm) Overall height: 99in (251.5cm) Width for base and mattress: 60in (152.5cm)* Length for base and mattress: 76 ½in (194.5cm)* Height to top of rails: 15 ¾in (40cm) Sizes for the base and mattress are taken from the outside edges of the rails Provenance: Purchased from Hull Bank House, Hull in 1936 From 1936 The Old Rectory, Winestead, East Riding of Yorkshire In 1947 Colonel Rupert Alexander Alec-Smith acquired 'The Old Rectory' in East Yorkshire. Principally a Georgian structure, the property was later modified by a local architect Francis Johnson (1911-1995). Ten years later The Colonel compiled an inventory of the contents of the house; meticulously working room by room and listing provenance where possible. In the introduction he describes how the itemised antiques 'have been inherited by me from my grandfather, Alexander Smith of Woodleigh House (1849-1927), and my father and mother at Warne Lodge; also items which I have collected myself as well as certain things from my wife's family at Holyrood House'. Many of the pieces were inherited, or purchased, from properties in the local area such as Sigglesthorne Hall, Hull and Philhurst, York, and further afield at The Woodlands, Cambridgeshire and Keystone Manor in Huntingdon.?? In January 1965 Country Life Magazine wrote an article focusing on the architecture of 'The Old Rectory' but also remarked on the spirit with which the contents were collected '...enthusiasm and interest are expressed in almost all the fittings, the furniture and portraits. The intrinsic visual appeal and historical interest has always been the main reason for their acquisition...' The published photographs offer a pictorial record perfectly illustrating the written inventory. Hull Bank Hall or House, Hull, was was also known as Haworth Hall after it’s occupants, the Haworths, who were an old and influential Yorkshire family who were timber merchants and extensive landowners, it is thought some of them were baronets.

An outstanding George III Scottish flame mahogany stage-back sideboard with original knife boxes and dating to circa 1800, probably Edinburgh. Each cistern is in the form of a fluted vase on a rectangular pedestal. The lead-lined vases have brass handles, removable lids with pineapple finials and taps. The crossbanded pedestals have cupboard doors enclosing slatted shelves for warming plates in one and a lead-lined slops drawers, a tambour fronted shelf and a cellaret in the other. Susan Stuart, 'Gillow of Lancaster and London', 2008 vol 1 p308-315 illustrates many pedestal urns including the drawings for Workington Hall, Cumbria, dated 1788. PLates 342 and 343 show pedestals with a similar arrangement of shelves and drawers.
