Antique English Set of Twelve George III Mahogany & Inlaid Dining Chairs

About the Item

A rare set of twelve George III mahogany tablet-back dining chairs attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and dating to circa 1790. Comprising two carver armchairs and ten side chairs, the backs with box and ebony strung fiddleback mahogany rails flanked by fielded uprights with pointed terminals, on slender turned tapering legs to the front and slightly tapering square outsplayed legs to the rear with Gothic inspired corner brackets. The armchairs have elegant downswept and out curving arms on turned baluster shaped supports. All with comfy cover-over seats newly upholstered in green hide leather with close nailed studs. Previously owned by Liverpool University and inscribed by them to the underside. All in solid mahogany, marks consistent with age and use including old repairs to the top rail of one armchair, and the fronts of the arms, chairs all solid with no movement in the joints. One armchair slightly lower than the other. Sidechairs 20 1/2in wide x 20 1/2in deep x 34 1/4in high (52cm x 52cm x 87cm) Seat height - 19in (48.5cm) Armchairs 22 1/4in wide x 21 1/4in deep x 35in high (56.5cm x 54cm x 89cm) Space between arms - 19in (48cm) Seat height - 20 1/4in (51.5cm) & 19 3/4in (50cm).

    A fantastic set of ten William IV mahogany dining chairs dating to circa 1830 and by J Proctor. Made from the best quality dense and finely figured mahogany these are heavier than standard chairs of this model, the waisted balloon back with a deep concave shaped toprail centred by a carved anthemion or palmette. The more desirable stuff-over type seats are covered in a woven burgundy coloured fabric edged with matching braid and are firmly filled, standing on turned and tulip carved front legs with substantial sabre shaped rear legs. Each stamped ‘J Proctor’ and ‘1063’ to the underside. In good condition with a deep rich colour to the timber and the original finish, some dents and marks consistent with age and use. There is a James Proctor recorded as a cabinetmaker in Lancaster circa 1818 and the Gillows archive lists a James Proctor listed as a journeyman in the 18th century, there is also a John...

    An outstanding George III Scottish flame mahogany stage-back sideboard with original knife boxes and dating to circa 1800, probably Edinburgh. Highlighted with plentiful boxwood stringing to the front and sides, the stage has a central inlaid tablet flanked by a pair of tambour doors and sits between the original knife boxes still with their original cutlery fittings.
