About the Item

Royal House Antiques Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this very rare and highly important, Museum quality, extra large framed, Documented English oak Tester bed circa 1580-1620 Charles I which is ornately carved from every angle Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price Where to begin, this bed is an absolute work of art, it is very large indeed, just under 8 feet tall, it is ornately carved from every single angle and tells a story no matter where you look. The bed has almost ancient erotic undertones which at the time this was made must have scandalous. The headboard has nude herms with large pointed breasts to the left and right, to their sides are Fauns, half goats half men and to the middle you have a beautifully carved serene looking bearded gentleman, if this chap was a piece alone he would sell for the £8,000-£10,000 price bracket, he is exquisite. The top rail starting from the left shows an animalistic man who looks to be in the throws of passion in an aggressive way, the front of the rail has a women who looks to be in three stages of serene pleasure and the right rail shows the man even more animalistic depicting the complete conversion from man to lion. The roof again is an absolute work of art, of which in the center is a crown giving this piece a bit of a royal nod The bed as mentioned is documented, I have the book which is A History of English Furniture by Percy MacQuoid The Age of Oak 1904, a very similar bed is pictured on page 77, the book itself retails for around the £200 mark and I will include it with the sale of the bed This is naturally a tour de force of craftsmanship, made in a time when quality was quality and the term no expense spared was coined The bed from top to bottom simply slots together, there are no bolts, the large top rails slot in with mental brackets, they are then dovetail jointed and have further wrought iron anchor mounts. This bed is not as stable as modern examples, as such if the new owner intends to use it as a bed I would suggest having a cabinet maker firm it up, most likely it will be purchased just for display Condition wise, there will most likely be some old small losses and repairs, I can't see anything of note, we have cleaned waxed and polished it from top to bottom, there will be age and use related patina marks consistent with a 400+ year old bed! Dimensions Height:- 241.5cm Width:- 177.5cm Depth:- 242cm Internal width:- 151cm Internal depth:- 196cm to the frame, 186cm to the foot pillar Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask Any questions please feel free to ask before you bid Condition Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.
