Large Spirit House from Northern Thailand, Teak, Mid-20th Century

About the Item

Large spirit house from Northern Thailand, teak, mid-20th century. Offered by Bruce Hughes. This large spirit house models a large scale Thai Buddhist temple, and incorporates a range of traditional architectural details -- the roof finial called the sky tassel or chofa, a central spire, the bargeboards running along the edges of the roofs fashioned in the form of the Naga, who act as protectors for the dwelling; a carved lintel above the entrance door incorporating the visage of another protective guardian. There are remnants of original color and lacquer. Many years of exposure to the elements have caused the colors to fade, and has resulted in some damaged areas, paricularly areas of the floor boards, as well as the rear fence. But the overall structure and stability of the piece is sound. Spirit Houses are called Saan phra phum in Thailand, and are built to house the spirits of the place. They are placed in the compounds of all houses, as well as at sacred places, revered trees, in caves, or near dangerous spots on the highway. Carved or plastic figures, are often placed in the dwelling -- representations of the king and queen, of a revered monk, or also carved wooden animals, particularly elephants. A wide range of regular offerings are brought to placate the spirits -- candy, incense, cigarettes, or alcohol. Spirits that are happy and well taken care of can go a long way in bringing good luck, success and happiness to a household. Dimensions: 23.5 inches wide by 40.25 inches deep by 36 inches tall.

Pair of Vintage Thai Bencharong Lidded Jars, 20th century. Bencharong enamel decoration with Buddhist imagery on a black background. This porcelain jar and lid form having a raised foot rim and lotus bud on a disk lid finial are richly decorated in bright polychrome enamels in the style of the royal household ceramics favored by the nobility in eighteenth century Siam. This colorful style became known as “bencharong”, a term that derives from two Sanskrit words – panch (‘five’) and rong (‘colour’) and which relates to the number of colors used to decorate such porcelain. These jars and covers are decorated with typical Thai motifs. The sides are decorated with four Thepanom (Buddhist celestial beings) each wearing a broad necklace of petals and seated on a lotus within triangular cartouches that have a coral-red ground. Four Norasingh (mythical forest-dwelling semi-deity with a human head, torso, and arms but with the hind-quarters of a lion and the tail and hoofs of a deer) against black back grounds filled with flaming purple kranok motifs. This design is framed by two floral bands top and bottom. The interior is a covered in a transparent glaze with unglazed lid edge and the gallery interior edge of the lid unglazed.
