Early 20th Century Thai Temple Drum

About the Item

This elegantly carved temple drum wase use in Buddhist Temples. It’s carved from teak and lacquered black with red and green stripped details. The top and straps are made of leather. These gigantic goblet drums were used principally in Buddhist temples, from the northern provinces of Thailand. History suggest that they were used as a signal to start the day and to regulate temple activities. In addition, they were played during festivals and to accompany folk dances.
