19th Century Northern Thai Temple Roof Finials, Carved Chofa

About the Item

This temple roof final is from the Isan region of Northern Thailand. Hand carved from teakwood into the shape of a chofa, it was used as an architectural detail in old traditional temple. The chofa is said to be a representation of a garuda – a Hindu mythical bird that is the ‘vehicle’ of the God Vishnuthe. It’s slender finial like a stylized bird’s head graces either end of a roof peak of a bot [the monks’ congregation hall] or vihan [worship hall]. The beautiful rain patina is created by the tropical weather of that region. The roof finial is mounted on a black stand.
