About the Item

The first and only example of a walnut lamellar propeller of the Savoia Marchetti SM 85 prototype flown for the first time on 19 December 1936 by Adriano Bacula, the company's test pilot. During the tests some modifications were made, including the change of the propeller from wooden two-blade to metal three-blade. On the prop it reads: SAVOIA MARCHETTI 85 B.G. PIAGGIO VII DIAM: 2:70 PASS 170 – 2.84 DIS 0599 MN 029252 The S.M. 85 was developed by the Italian company Savoia Marchetti in the 1930s as a dive bomber based on a project by Eng. Alessandro Marchetti for the Regia Aeronautica, equipped with a Piaggio P. VII propulsion engine. The need was to create tactically effective aircraft flying at the lowest possible altitude in order to be able to attack and arrive at the target by exploiting the surprise of the enemy. Based on this assumption, SAVOIA – MARCHETTI began the development of the S.M. 85, to Eng. Alessandro Marchetti was entrusted with the project to develop two aircraft models in parallel to meet the specific needs. 85 and the S.M. 86. In August 1915, the Società Idrovolanti Alta Italia (SIAI) was founded in Milan, dealing with the construction under license and the marketing of seaplanes. In 1920 SIAI bought the Società Anonima Costruzioni Aeronautiche SAVOIA The aircraft produced were known under the name SIAI-Savoia, in the 1930s the name of the company was also associated with that of the aircraft designer, thus mentioning the name of engineer Alessandro Marchetti already became in 1922 chief designer. Between the twenties and forties, Savoia Marchetti was one of the most important Italian aeronautical companies, towards the end of the sixties it was bought by Agusta, then by Aermacchi in 1997, which later became Alenia Aermacchi, then merged into Finmeccanica and today Leonardo.
