About the Item

A very rare World War II 1/5 scale wind tunnel development model of a Douglas "Destroyer" XSB2D-1 torpedo and dive bomber, circa 1942. The model was made by N.A.C.A. and tested at their Ames research facility, Moffett Field, CA . Now NASA Ames Research Center (ARC). The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) was established on March 3, 1915, to undertake, promote, and institutionalise aeronautical research. On October 1, 1958, the agency was dissolved and its assets and personnel transferred, and name changed to created what is now known as NASA the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Exhibited at the Museum of Flying, Santa Monica, CA, as part of the Douglas Archive. Literature: Naval Fighters Number Thirty, Douglas XSB2D-1 & BTD-1 Destroyer, by Bob Kowalski & Steve Ginter. (Model photographed on Page 48).      Mounted on a later display stand. Notes on the Douglas Destroyer: On 20 June 1941, the United States Navy placed an order with the Douglas Aircraft Company for two prototypes of a new two-seat dive bomber to replace both the Douglas SBD Dauntless and the new Curtiss SB2C Helldiver, designated XSB2D-1. The resulting aircraft, designed by a team led by Ed Heinemann, was a large single-engined mid-winged monoplane. It had a laminar flow gull-wing, and unusually for a carrier-based aircraft of the time, a tricycle undercarriage. It was fitted with a bomb bay and underwing racks for up to 4,200 lb (1,900 kg), while defensive armament consisted of two wing-mounted 20 mm (0.79 in) cannon and two remote-controlled turrets, each with two .50 in (12.7 mm) machine guns. The Destroyer first flight was on 8 April 1943.

Bronze Waterline Model of the Submarine HMS Finwhale
Located in London, GB
A bronze waterline model of the Royal Navy porpoise-class submarine HMS Finwhale (SO5). HMS Finwhale (S05) was the fifth Porpoise-class submarine of the Royal Navy. She was launched on 21 July 1959 and first commissioned on 19 August 1960. During her first commission she went further under the ice than any other submarine at the time. She was recommissioned on 27 January 1964. In March 1965 on her second Arctic patrol she further eclipsed her first ice patrol, penetrating 95 miles into the ice. The Porpoise class was an eight-boat class of diesel-electric submarines operated by the Royal Navy. This class was originally designated patrol submarines, then attack. They were the first conventional British submarines to be built after the end of World War II. Their design was, in many ways, influenced by the German World War...

A large model of a TSR2 fighter plane designed by British Aircraft Corporation 1958 -1964. A rare example of a TSR2 was developed between the late 1950s to 1964 for the Royal Airforce. The body is Aluminium which has been silver plated but still shows traces of original condition with slight pitting to leading surface. About the aircraft; It was designed to penetrate a well defended forward battle area and then attack high value targets in the rear with nuclear or conventional weapons. There were only 3 ever built by BAC at a development cost of £22 million pounds and this proved a bridge too far with a new labour government and it led to controversial decision to scrap the program in 1965. This was also the year of the final test flights speeds of Mach 1...
