1888-1891 The Bankside Shakespeare: The Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies

About the Item

An attractive fifteen volumes of the limited edition Bankside Shakespeare, edited by Appleton Morgan, and uniformly bound in half calf. One of 500 limited edition copies of the Bankside Shakespeare. Fifteen volumes of the twenty-two volume set, uniformly bound in half calf bindings with a ribbon marker. Top edge gilt. The first fifteen volumes of plays from the Bankside Shakespeare, compiled and edited by the American scholar James Appleton Morgan, best known as Appleton Morgan (1845-1928), between 1888 and 1906. Morgan uses the texts which were given to the players, printed in parallel with the first revised folio text, the Heminges and Condell Text of 1623. Each volume includes enlightening critical introductions by various authors, who analyse the text and provide historical context for the development of each play. Volume XV is illustrated with a frontispiece. This set comprises: I: The Merry Wives of Windsor (Players' Text of 1602) with an analytical study by Appleton Morgan (1888) II: The Taming of the Shrew (Players' Text of 1594) with an analytical study by Albert R. Frey (1888) III: The Merchant of Venice (Players' Text of 1600) with an introduction by William Reynolds (1888) IV: Troilus and Cressida (Players' Text of 1609) with an introduction by Appleton Morgan (1889) V: The Tragedie of Romeo and Juliet (Players' Text of 1597) with an introduction by B. Rush Field (1889) VI: Much Adoe about Nothing (Players' Text of 1600) with an introduction by Wm. H. Fleming (1889) VII: The Lamentable Tragedie of Titus Andronicus (Players' Text of 1600) with an introduction by Appleton Morgan (1890) VIII: A Midsommer Nights Dreame (Players' Text of 1600) with an introduction by William Reynolds (1890) IX: The Tragedie of Othello (Players' Text of 1622) with an introduction by Prof. Thomas R. Price (1890) X: King Lear (Players' Text of 1608) with an introduction by Alvey Augustus Adee (1890) XI: Hamlet, Prince of Denmarke (Players' Text of 1603) with an introduction by Edward P. Vining (1890) XII: The First Part of Henry the Fourth (Players' Text of 1598) with an introduction by Wm. H. Fleming (1890) XIII: The Second Part of Henry the Fourth (Players' Text of 1600) with an introduction by Wm. H. Calkins (1891) In half calf bindings. Externally, generally smart, with light rubbing to the spine, extremities and joints. Faint marks to the boards. Damp stain to the front board of volume IX. Gilt remains bright. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Overall: Very Good Indeed

An exceptionally bright example of the scarce 1813 twenty-one volume set of the plays of Shakespeare, supplemented with a wealth of comments and critical notices. The very scarce complete 1813 twenty-one volume edition of the plays of Shakespeare.
