My Life on the Plains by Gen. G. A. Custer, First Edition, 1874
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Custer, General George A. My Life on the Plains; Or, Personal Experiences with the Indians by New York: Sheldon and Company, 1874. First Edition. Octavo. Rebound in ¼ leather and cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt titles, and gilt tooling to the spine, and a new archival cloth slipcase inlaid with the original front panel. Presented is a first edition printing of My Life on the Plains; or, Personal Experiences with the Indians by General George A. Custer. The book has been archivally rebound in 1/4 brown leather and cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt titles, and gilt tooling to the spine. It is presented with a new archival cloth slipcase, inlaid with the original front panel’s buffalo head motif. A portrait of Custer begins the volume, with seven additional full page wood engravings by Roberts throughout. My Life on the Plains was first published serially in Galaxy magazine, starting in May 1872. It was then issued in book form by New York publishers Sheldon and Company in 1874. Covering the years 1867–69, Custer’s book tells of the Seventh Cavalry’s operations on the frontier during the period of most extensive military activity against the Plains Indians. Included in the book are his descriptions of the landscape and speculations on the history and nature of the "Indians." Custer's narrative begins with the expedition of Major-General Hancock in the spring of 1867 and ends with the Washita campaign on the frontiers of Kansas. This book is considered a "classic account of military operations against various tribes of Plains Indians in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas” (Encyclopedia of American War Literature, pg. 84.) This is the only full-length book Custer published during his lifetime, issued just two years before his death at The Battle of Little Bighorn...

The Overland Guide From the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean, Revised, 1883
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Gleed, Charles S, ed. Rand, McNally & Co.'s Overland Guide From the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean Via Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Chicago: Rand, McNally & Co., 1883. Revised Edition. Rebound in ¼ red leather and cloth boards, with original cloth gilt-stamped pictorial front board saved, new marbled endpapers, and a custom archival slipcase to match. Illustrated throughout with engravings. This is a “Revised Edition” of the Rand, McNally & Co.'s Overland Guide From the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean, via Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and California. The book was edited by Charles S. Gleed and published by Rand, McNally & Co., in Chicago in 1883. It has been artfully rebound in ¼ red leather and cloth boards, with the original gilt-stamped pictorial front cloth board saved, new marbled endpapers, and a matching archival cloth slipcase. As explained in the beginning of the guidebook, the purpose of the book is “to give the reader a satisfactory general idea of the States and Territories of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, through which the traveler passes in going from the Missouri river to the Pacific ocean, or vice versa, entering or leaving California at its southern extremity.” Following the southern route of railways, editor Charles Gleed lays out in extensive detail information on each state, including population numbers, key industries, important towns and railway stations, farming and agriculture, mining opportunities, and weather patterns. Throughout the guidebook are countless engravings, both full page and in-text, from well known engravers of the time. Meant to further entice readers to take this overland journey, the illustrations offer views of key tourist spots, townviews, and scenic destinations, throughout the featured states of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The guidebook is also supplemented by pages of printed advertisements in the beginning of the book, showcasing local businesses, services, and wares. Charles Sumner...
