The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments, 1887

About the Item

The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments, Translated out of the Original Tongues: And with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised, by His Majesty’s Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches. Oxford: The University Press, 1885. With original full burgundy leather and gilded boards. Gilded edges. Presented with a custom-made archival clamshell box. Presented is a beautifully restored and exquisitely bound Holy Bible from 1887. It contains both the Old and New Testaments, "translated out of original tongues and with the former translations diligently compared and revised, by His Majesty’s special command." It features several pages of full color maps, as well as an ornate presentation page, marriage certificate, temperance pledge page, and family pages. This bible was produced as a family bible, to be handed down through a family with each successive generation. Family bibles were used as a marker of each married couple’s journey through life and the family’s history was commonly recorded in the bible. This bible features a presentation page, a beautifully illustrated marriage certificate, pages for marriages, births, and deaths, as well as a family temperance pledge page. The family pages of this bible are blank, and could still be filled in and used as originally intended by whoever purchases this bible. Family bibles, often very large and elaborately decorated, first came into popularity during the Victorian era in the United Kingdom. Afterwards, the family bible was seen throughout Europe and eventually made its way into American households. This bible was printed by The University Press, in Oxford, England, for the British and Foreign Bible Society. The British and Foreign Bible Society was one of the first Bible societies in the world. It was founded in 1804 at the urging of Welsh religious leader Thomas Charles and members of the Clapham sect, who proposed the idea of making vernacular translations of the Scriptures available to peoples of all nationalities and languages, at a price they could actually afford to pay. It also offered financial assistance to Bible societies in other countries. This bible’s period binding is exquisite, with gilt-tooled front and back full burgundy leather boards. The spine has six gilt-tooled compartments, raised bands, and gilt titles. The paper edges are gilded and the bible is presented with a new, custom-made archival clamshell box. The advent of the printing press encouraged the craft of books that the small, literate class valued as works of art. Intricately bound books fell out of style in the late 18th century, but in the late 19th century, a resurgence of sumptuously bound special editions of bibles, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and poetry countered the popularity of cheaper, popular dime novels. Several publishers sought to elevate the book back to a piece of artistry that would be cherished for generations to come, and used expensive leathers, handmade marbled boards, gilt details, metal clasps, and gauffered edges to do so. This is one such example of the exquisite book artistry created during that time. CONDITION: Very good condition. Original full burgundy leather front and back boards, with intricate gilt tooling. The spine has raised bands, six compartments, gilt titles, and tooling. Gilded edges. Interior pages are very healthy. With several pages of full-color maps. Original marriage certificate page, restored facsimile presentation, marriages, births, deaths, and temperance pages. The bible has been professionally restored and preserved. Bible is housed in a new, custom-made leather grained cloth clamshell case. Case is archival and features a gilt cross stamp to the front and gilt titles to the spine. • 1863 "Lloyd's New Map of the United States, the Canadas, and New Brunswick"
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is “Lloyd's New Map of the United States, the Canadas and New Brunswick, From the latest Surveys, Showing Every Railroad & Station Finished to June 1863, and the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts.” A large, Civil War-era hanging map of the United States and adjacent territories, this map covers the area from the Atlantic Ocean and extends as far west as the 103 meridian, to “Dacotah,” Nebraska, Kansas, "Indian Territory," and Texas. The southern continuation of Florida is shown in an inset map along the right margin. This map was published by J. T. Lloyd, in New York, in 1863. According to the publisher’s marking at lower right, this map was originally issued in two states: "in Sheets, Colored" for 50 cents, and "Varnished nicely, with Rollers" for $1. Throughout the map, the counties are colored and the towns and cities well labeled. A reference key in the bottom margin provides symbols for railroads, turnpikes and wagon roads, state capitals, cities and towns, and village post offices. As emphasized in the map’s title, this map is especially notable for the countless railway lines and stations depicted, with distances noted between points, listing “every railroad and finished station to June 1863.” Additionally, two shipping agents and their routes are drawn out of New York City. The map includes details of the steamship routes into New York and Philadelphia from Liverpool and on to California and Oregon via an overland Nicaraguan trek, presumably to assist gold rush emigrants. This expansive and impressive map depicts the eastern half of the United States in the third year of the Civil War. In order not to recognize the legitimacy of the Confederate States of America, each state is shown in the same manner as the Union states. The only indication that the American Civil War was in progress when this map was published is a printed notice that Gideon Wells, Secretary of the Navy, wishes to acquire a quote on 100 copies of Lloyd’s Mississippi River map...

  • McClellan's Own Story by George B. McClellan, First Edition, 1887
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
McClellan, George B. McClellan’s Own Story: The war for the Union, the soldiers who fought it, the civilians who directed it, and his relations to it and them. New York: Charles Webster, 1887. First edition. Illustrated with steel plate engravings and maps. Rebound in quarter navy leather and cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt tooling, and titles to the spine, new marbled endpapers, and a new archival cloth slipcase. Presented is the first edition of George B. McClellan Civil War memoir, McClellan’s Own Story: The War for the Union. The memoir was published posthumously in 1887 by Charles Webster, in New York. It is presented rebound in stunning quarter navy leather and cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt tooling, and titles to the spine, and new marbled endpapers. The book comes with a new archival cloth slipcase, with an inset image of McClellan on the front. General George B. McClellan is one of the most controversial figures of the American Civil War. His chief contribution to the Union cause was his brilliant ability to organize and train troops. Yet he proved to be an overly cautious and indecisive General. Despite early wins in West Virginia, McClellan began to fear the Confederate Army’s growing size and strength. He grew increasingly hesitant to engage without more men or resources and disagreed with many of Lincoln’s war decisions. As a result, McClellan was removed as General-in-Chief in the spring of 1862, though he retained command of the Army of the Potomac. After the Battle of Seven Pines, a hasty retreat to Washington after the Seven Days Battles, and the epic contest at Antietam, McClellan was removed from all command in November of that same year. He went on to become the unsuccessful Democratic Party nominee in the 1864 presidential election against the Republican Lincoln. Criticized after the Civil War, McClellan never publicly defended his actions as commander of the Union army. In this book, however, his memoir provides his answers to the many critics. Using a combination of military documents...
