1896 The Principles of Light and Color
About the Item
A vibrantly illustrated, second edition of this exceptionally scarce work surrounding colour and the science of chromotherapy, written by American physician Edwin Babbitt.
The second edition of this exceptionally scarce work.
Bound in full morocco.
Dated using Jisc from copies of the work held at the National Library of Scotland.
Written by American physician Edwin Dwight Babbitt, who was known as one of the earliest pioneers in the science of chromotherapy.
In 'The Principles of Light and Color', Babbitt's aim was to highlight the medicinal benefits of chromotherapy, using colour and light as part of his treatments. Additionally, the author wanted to present to the world a philosophy of colour and light, which he believed was integral to understanding the principles of life.
Wonderfully illustrated with four vibrant coloured plates, one of which is a double page, with more than two hundred additional vignettes throughout the work. Collated, complete.
With five pages of reviews to the rear of the work.
With the morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the front pastedown. William Foyle founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England.
Bound in full morocco. Externally, excellent, with a little rubbing to the joints and a touch of fading to the spine. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound with bright, clean pages. One or two light marks to the plates. Frontispiece is a little tender, with a small tear to gutter.
