About the Item
There are numerous books available today on the history of Italian design, but unlike other research areas where the material is gathered together systematically in chronological order or according to other criteria, with design this has not so far been the case.
There are dictionaries of the architecture, of the cinema and the theatre, but not of design. My aim has been to collect up what was produced in the field of design between 1950 and 1980 and to divide up this material into years. I have deliberately limited the area to home furniture, thus excluding accessories, fixed equipment and kitchen facilities.
Practically speaking I have tried to give a yearly account of production, and this has meant omitting all furniture designed outside the sphere of mass production. For example Mollino's furniture is not included, despite its importance, because it was built exclusively for private clients.
The division of all the material into three ten year periods is merely a way of making the chronological aspect easier to use from a practical point of view. The book does not claim to cover everything that was produced in those years, but at least what I personally felt was relevant to the really rather exciting history in question: that of Italian Furniture design between 1950 and 1980.
