Les Decorateurs des annees 50 by Paterick Favardin (Book)

About the Item

The revival of the decorative arts in the post-war France is extremely diverse, from the 40 style that endures through official commissions to the classic or neoclassical furniture whose success is unprecedented. Modernity remains a fight to be waged after the failure of the Union of Modern Artists (UAM) which, too rigorous, has not been able to convince either the industrialists or the public. This challenge is taken up by the younger generation of decorators presented in this book. Their approach did not obey the strict rules of a pre-established aesthetic, as advocated by the thinking machines of their time that were, before the war, the Cranbrook Academy in the United States, the Bauhaus and the Ulm School in Germany or the UAM in France. It responds to the needs and aspirations of a country in full reconstruction, with the extraordinary vitality that characterizes the time. After an introduction that emphasizes the alliance of ethics and aesthetics, fantasy and rigor, of this abundant and singular French creation, on the margins of the nascent design, this book is organized into four parts, each preceded by an introduction that defines the historical context. In the first place come the great decorators, the masters of the interwar period, such as Adnet, Arbus or Old, and the representatives of a style 50 in freedom, playful and freed from any discourse in "ism", that were Matégot, Royère or Raphaël. Then, the great figures of Reconstruction - Gascoin, Hitier, Renou or Sognot - who transmitted to the next generation the sense of a demanding and purist modernity, sometimes of an astonishing avant-gardism. Their spiritual sons, many of whom remain unknown to design historians and who were barely twenty years old in the early 50s, are named Gautier-Delaye, Guariche, Motte, Paulin, Richard or Philippon and Lecoq. Closer to foreign designers, dreaming of an international art at the service of all, they are the first to have succeeded in a real collaboration with industrialists. In addition to these thirty-two biographical and stylistic monographs, the author Patrick Favardin analyses the establishment of structures, totally new for the France, of publishing, promotion and dissemination, with manufacturers such as Airborne, Les Huchers-Minvielle or Steiner, galleries such as that of Steph Simon and the MAI gallery, the workshops of department stores, decoration magazines and the Salons des arts ménagers. So many actors who passionately brought their reflection and support, technical as well as financial, to what was an unprecedented adventure. 336 pages. 2180 grams. Text: French.
