Adam Silver 1765-1795 by Robert Rowe. New York: Tapliger Publishing Co., Inc. 1965. First American edition hardcover with no dust jacket. 94 pages of text and additional pages with 96 plates. A book on the silver designed by the Scottish neoclassical architect, interior designer and style maker Robert Adam (1728-1792.) He was a leader in the classical revival style in England and in Scotland from around 1760 until his death. As an interior designer he designed everything from furniture to the house's silver. Although not a silversmith his designs were made by some of England's finest makers. The book includes many of his design drawings along with photographs of the actual finished silver pieces. Condition: Internally clean and bright, armorial bookplate of Sir John Eden to front pastedowns, extremely minor foxing to first and last leaves, inner and outer hinges fine, head and foot of spines fine, a handsom set. Additional information: An exceedingly rare gothic novel by Robinson (known as "the English Sappho") set during the French Revolution. In her lifetime Robinson was better known as an actress and lady of fashion as well as for a string of prominent affairs, including with George IV whilst he was still Prince of Wales whose portrait she wore encrusted with diamonds throughout her life but who she did not hesitate to blackmail for £5000 pounds when he cast her off. Her literary output, though derided at the time, has since been reassessed and Robinson herself now seen as a proto-feminist.
