About the Item

Schlesinger, Arthur M., Jr. The Age of Jackson. New York: The American Past, 1989. Book of the Month Club edition. New introduction by the author with original boards, dust jacket, slipcase. This Book of the Month Club edition by Arthur Schlesinger was published in 1989 out of New York. Revised from the first edition copy of 1945, this edition was produced as part of the American Past Series and features new enhancements such as the author’s new introduction and illustrations selected by Joan Paterson Kerr. The book was published by arrangement with Little, Brown and Company. The book is complete with the publisher’s slipcase and original binding. Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. won a Pulitzer Prize for his work, The Age of Jackson. He became well known for his detailed political biographies, including his other award-winning book A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House. A history professor at Harvard University, Schlesinger re-interpreted the American era of ‘Jacksonian Democracy.’ In this book, he analyzes the political, social, cultural, and economic aspects of the period between the 1820s and 1840s. Schlesinger uses the book as a platform with which to delve deeper into Jackson’s presidency and his relationship with the American people. His theories and narrative are accompanied by illustrations and political cartoons throughout. Condition: Overall very good condition. The original brown cloth boards have a gilt embossed facsimile signature of Arthur Schlesinger Jr. on the front cover and gilt embossed title and author information on the spine. The top edges of the pages have some smudges. Otherwise, the pages are clean and the boards show no other damage. The original yellow dust jacket is in fine condition with no tears, losses, or stains. The original publisher’s brown cloth slipcase matches the boards. An image of Jackson from an 1845 oil painting by Thomas Sully is set inside a recess on the front of the cover. Dimensions: 10" H x 6 7/8" W x 2 1/4" D (with slipcase).
