Collins, Michael. Carrying the Fire: An Astronaut’s Journeys. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1974. First edition and first printing, signed and inscribed by Collins. The book includes the original dust jacket and is presented with a custom archival slipcase. This first edition first printing of Michael Collins’ Carrying the Fire features an inscription and signature by the astronaut on the first free end paper reading, “To Bob and Terry, with all good wishes - Michael Collins.” Published in 1974, the book includes a forward by Charles A. Lindbergh. Michael Collins was part of the three-man crew on the Apollo 11 Mission that allowed the first man to walk on the Moon. While Niel Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked the surface, Collins became the second to fully orbit the Moon alone as he manned the spacecraft. In his book, the famous astronaut describes what it was truly like “up there,” the pre- and post-flight activities required of the astronauts, and how they affected the lives of those involved in the momentous Mission. Condition: Overall very good condition. Michael Collins’ signature on the first free end paper is clear and dark. The original blue cloth boards are mildly faded along the top and bottom edge from age and the binding is slightly loose. All pages are present and they are free of tears, stains, etc. the dust jacket has a few creases and tears along the top edge on the reverse, but the decorative front cover is clean and without notable damage. The book is housed in a red custom made archival slipcase adorned with a photo of Collins in his spacesuit. Dimensions: 9.75” H x 6.5” W x 2.125” D (with slipcase).
