Gouthire's Candelabras by Charlotte Vignon and Edmund De Waal. 1st Ed hardcover, no dust jacket as published. Published by D Giles Ltd, London, 2019. Pierre Gouthiere (17321813), the celebrated gilder to the French kings. This book offers fresh insight into a pair of candelabra that represent the pinnacle of luxury and taste in the years prior to the French Revolution. Vignon tells the fascinating story of these objects that are made of two small white vases with extraordinary gilt-bronze mounts by Pierre Gouthiere, the celebrated eighteenth-century French chaser and gilder. Vignon's essay is paired with a text by De Waal in which he examines what it is to make, own, and desire such complex objects. Edmund de Waal is a British artist, and author of The Hare with Amber Eyes (2010) and The White Road (2015). He is mostl known for his large-scale installations of porcelain vessels and has received several awards and honors for his work. Charlotte Vignon is curator of Decorative Arts at The Frick Collection, as well as a visiting associate professor at the Bard Graduate Center, New York. 30 color images offers fresh insight into two exquisite masterworks by Pierre Gouthiere.
